COCKROACHES:
ORDER: DICTYOPTERA, FAMILY: BLATTIDAE
Cockroaches are the
most dominated among all household pests
found all over the world. They cause
nuisance by their presence and also act
as a carrier of various serious diseases
causing pathogens like Gastroenteritis,
Cholera etc. Cockroaches must moult
regularly throughout their life-cycle
and can cause severe asthmatic
reactions, particularly to children, the
elderly and people with bronchial
ailments. Cockroaches are nocturnal in
habit and remain inactive during
daytime. Cockroaches are omnivorous and
feed on any vegetable/animal substance. |
Most common species of
cockroaches observed in India are German
Cockroach, American Cockroach, Brown Banded
Cockroach and Oriental Cockroach.
German cockroach
(Blatella germanica)
is most common cockroach
found in Indian kitchen, restaurants, and food
processing plants, supermarkets and warehouses.
The German cockroach is the most prolific
breeder among all cockroaches. The female German
cockroach lives up to 6 months. She carries an
egg capsule containing 30 to 40 eggs.
Development from egg to adult can occur in 45
days. The German cockroach will breed rapidly
throughout the year, but favour a humid
environment of around 80F or warmer. A small
initial infestation can become a major problem
in a few months.
American Cockroaches (Periplaneta
americana)
Preferred daytime habitat
locations include the sub floor, basement, in
sewers and other warm, dark, moist locations.
They avoid cold areas but will thrive outdoors
in temperatures above 80F. Indoors they often
congregate around hot water pipes, fridge
motors, boilers and other heating appliances.
The American cockroach feeds on a wide variety
of plant and animal material.
Brown Banded
Cockroaches (Supella longipalpis)
is light brown and can be
distinguished from the German cockroach by to
lighter transverse bands running from one side
to the other in both the sexes. You will
normally find the brown banded cockroach in the
same buildings as the German cockroach. Due to
these two cockroaches looking almost the same
mis-identification is possible. Females will
produce about 14 egg capsules during their adult
life, each containing about 18 eggs. The brown
banded cockroach can be found high on ceilings
or walls, behind pictures, near motors of
refrigerators and other appliances. Adults may
fly when disturbed.
Oriental cockroach (Blatta
orientalis)
Most often found in dark
basements or cellars, but can also climb garbage
shuts, sewer and water pipes to the upper floors
in highrise. The female lives up to 2 years;
deposits up to 18 egg-sacs in lifetime; each egg
sac contains 16 eggs. |
