HOUSEFLY is common
household pest but becomes serious problem when
observed in restaurants and food handling units.
Especially in rainy seasons the nuisance is
more. Housefly infestation also a serious treat
to life of humans and animals as more than
hundred pathogene are associated with it causing
diseases like typhoid, cholera, bacillary
dysentery, as well as parasitic worms.

The housefly has a
complete metamorphosis with distinct egg. larva
or maggot pupal & adult stages. It can
complete its life cycle in 7 days under
favourable conditions.
Characteristics
1. Housefly is 6 to 7 mm
long, with the female usually longer than the
male.
2. This species is always
found in association with humans or activities
of humans.
3. Each female fly can
lay up to 500 eggs in several batches of about
75 to 150 eggs, each over a period of three to
four days.
4. the fully-grown
maggots have a greasy, cream-coloured appearance
and are 8 to 12 mm in length. The larvae go
through three instars.
I) Integrated Fly
Management
Sanitation is the main
key in controlling houseflies. Decaying organic
matter such as wet manure and other such
material where flies can breed should be removed
from the site. Garbage cans should have tight
fitting lids and cleaned regularly. Garbage
receptacles should be located as far from
building entrance as possible.
