MOSQUITOES are foremost
in man's war against insects. The blood sucking
creatures not only cause nuisance by their
irritating bites but also create health menace,
as they are about responsible for spreading
serious diseases like Malaria, Dengue, yellow
fever, Japanese Encephalitis, Chikun Gunya etc.
Mosquitoes belong to
order Diptera. There are about 3200 species
of mosquitoes existing in the world out of which
the following 3 species are of medical
importance in india.
Anopheles spp. Most
important species which acts as a vector for
malarial parasites (Plasmodium spp.). Active
during dusk hours and are also known as midnight
biters. Anopheles Culicifacies is the main vector
of malaria.
Culex spp. Culicine
mosquitoes are painful & persistent biters
& weak fliers. These mosquitoes are very
common, widespread. They breed in water with
luxuriant vegetation in may fields, shallow
ditches & pools.
Aedes spp. Unlike Culex,
Aedes mosquitoes are also painful and persistent
biters. Aedes mosquitoes are strong fliers. Aedes aegypti
is responsible for spreading
Dengue and Chikun Gunya. Aedes mosquitoes breed
in stored exposed water collection like drums,
jars, pots, buckets, discarded bottles, tins,
tyres etc. & a lot more places where
rainwater gets collected and stored.
Life Cycle
Mosquitoes undergo
complete metamorphosis. Their life cycle
involves four stages 1) Egg 2) Larva 3) Pupa
& 4) Adult. First three stages are
associated with water It takes 8-10 days to
complete life cycle from egg to adult under
optimum conditions. Mosquitoes have total life
span of 30 days.
Mode of Treatment
As first 3 stages of
mosquitoes are associated with water, the
treatment is mainly divided in two parts.
I) Larvel Management :- Larvel stage is the weakest link in mosquito
life cycle. Mosquito breeds in stagnant water.
Larvel treatment will be carried out after
identifying breeding places using suitable
larvicide.
II) Adult Management :-
Adult management can be carried out by
using following two methods.
a) Indoor and Outdoor
Residual spraying :- The treatment consists
of through spray of insecticides having
residual effect, shall be sprayed on inside and
outside area of wall surface.
b) Fogging and Misting :-
Thermal fogging or Misting ( Application of
insecticides in the form of fine droplets ) also
can be carried out to control adult mosquitoes.
This treatment is generally suggested for the
compound area and gardens.
