RODENTS are
intelligent mammals and related with
mankind from hundreds of years. They
depend on man and its property for food
and shelter. Rodents are prolific
breeders; young ones attain sexual
maturity within 12 weeks in ideal
conditions. One pair can rapidly
multiply to 800 in one year. They are
agile, good climbers and swimmers. They
can easily climb on pipes, cables and
enter into structures.
Why to control
Rodents?
Rodents cause more
damage by contamination with urine,
feaces and hair, which reduces the sales
value of the product. Rodents have
compulsive gnawing habit & because of
this habit they destroy many articles
like packing material, clothes, electric
cables, lead pipes etc. They normally
lives in burrows and due to their
burrowing habit they destroy structures
such as floor, buildings etc. They also
cause damage to the root system of
plants leading to heavy loss to
agriculture. Rodents are carriers of
more than 40 diseases like Leptospirosis,
Salmonellosis, Plague (Epidemic
disease), Trichinosis etc. |
Common species
observed in India
House mouse (Mus musculus)
Smallest species of the rat. Head + body
length is 70-110mm, large ears and relatively
small eyes, they have characteristic musky odour
that identifies their presence. The house mouse
is a good climber. They can jump more than 1 ft.
on to a flat surface and squeeze through just 6
½ mm diameter opening.
Roof Rat (Rattus rattus)
Moderate body size, common rat found in our
homes. Dark brown to black in colour. They are
also known as house rat and black rat. The ears
are thin, translucent, hairless and relatively
large. The tail is longer than body + head
length. They are good climbers and prefer foods
like seeds, vegetables fruits and cereals. They
generally follow the same route leaving
characteristic rub or swing mark on vertical
surface.

Norway Rat (Rattus
norvegicus)
Large size, brown in colour. The tail is
shorter than body + head length. Ears are thick,
opaque and short with fine hairs. They are
excellent swimmers and grow rapidly in sewers
and drainage systems, therefore also called as
sewer rat
Bandicoot rat (Bandicota
indica)
The largest and most aggressive rat in India.
Large sized active burrower and is responsible
for much structural damage to the storage
buildings, ground, flooring and also spoils
stored products. They are good swimmers and
non-fussy eater. It is also serious a pest in
poultry and agriculture.

Mode of treatment
Proofing
This technique restricts the access of the
rodents in an area. Various entry points are
noted during the inspection of our technical
executive and report is prepared, which helps in
taking corrective action against rodents.
Fitting rat guards to the drainpipes and various
other proofing measures such as fitting hard
metal strips to the bottom edges of door can be
done to minimize rodent population entering in
the structure.
Mechanical Measures
Mechanical rodent control techniques are more
appropriate in house holds. The commonly used
method is trapping. The treatment comprises
placing mechanical traps and sticky or glue
traps in rodent runways.
Chemical Measures
Various type of rodenticides are used depends on
rodent population & species. It is strongly
recommended that only anticoagulant rodenticides
should be used in buildings. Bait shyness with
anticoagulant is unusual even at higher
concentration. Systematic placement of rodent
bait stations and rodenticide is necessary for
keeping rodent population under Economic
Threshold Level.
Rodent Bait Stations
Rodent Bait Station is the important constituent
in chemical and mechanical control of Rodents.
The Rodent Bait Station is a rectangular metal
box in which rodent bait or Glue trap is kept.
Advantages of Rodent Bait
Station
1) Rodents have a habit of eating in dark
places, so get attracted easily towards Bait
Stations.
2) Rodent Bait station is a labeled instrument
and hence it becomes very easy to detect the
places where rodenticide is kept.
3) As the Rodent bait is kept under box it is
not easily accessible to pets and children and
hence safer for pets and children.
4) Contamination or dilution of rodenticide can
be avoided, and therefore the bait remains
effective for a longer period.
